A young boy was flown to a hospital Thursday afternoon after Penn Township Police said he got out of his car seat and was hit by another vehicle on Baltimore Street.

The boy's name and condition were not available Thursday evening, said township Deputy Chief Jim Laughlin, but Laughlin said he was told the injuries were not life-threatening.

Though he didn't have an exact age, Laughlin said the boy was about 3 years old.

At about 12:40 p.m., the boy was in a car seat in a stopped vehicle southbound in the 500 block of Baltimore Street, Laughlin said. The make and model of the vehicle were not available, and it wasn't clear whether the vehicle was in a lane of travel or pulled along the curb.

It appears the boy was able to get out of the car seat, then he exited the vehicle and went around to the front of it, Laughlin said.

The boy then stepped into the lane of traffic, apparently trying to reach relatives who live in the block, Laughlin said.

"The striking vehicle immediately came upon him," he said. "He stepped right out."

Laughlin said he didn't know the make, model or driver of the striking vehicle, nor how fast it was going, but he said it appears "everything was legit."

More information on the incident should be available today, Laughlin said.
